Dauphin, Manitoba, Canada – October 13,2017 – The Parkland Crisis Centre & Women’s Shelter and the Manitoba Association of Women's Shelters (MAWS) announces a fundraiser during the month of November for Domestic Violence Awareness Month, help us spread the word about “Seats and Feets, Sock and Underwear Drive”.
Each year shelters in Manitoba assist approximately 3000 women, men and children, often arriving at the shelter with just the clothes on their backs. When violence happens victims will grab the children and run as you don’t have time to pack a bag in a dangerous situation. Help us provide new underwear and socks to men, women and children arriving at our shelter.
Deena Brock, Provincial Coordinator for MAWS stated “It’s an uncomfortable conversation but anyone’s friend or relative can one day find themselves in an abusive relationship and may need, without notice, the services of a domestic violence shelter. We are asking the public to help provide the items that the shelters need.”
Please contact the shelter closest to you to arrange your donation or perhaps encourage your work place to do a donation drive during November, Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Visit the MAWS website for a list of the shelters.
During the year 2016-2017 Parkland Crisis Centre and Women’s shelter provided 1,497 bed nights to women, men and children who were victims of domestic violence and dealt with 1,500 crisis line calls.
Kari Prawdzik, Executive Director of The Parkland Crisis Centre said “the average number of bed nights provided to women and children experiencing domestic violence in Dauphin is approximately 960. This year, those numbers have more than doubled. Being able to provide them comforts such as a new underwear, socks, and personal hygiene items is an important part of what we do. We can’t do it without the support of the community. “
